XBox 360 versus PS3

Major Nelson works for Microsoft and comments and does a lot with the Xbox community, the system, etc… He does a comparison of the new Xbox 360 versus (hell yes I spelled the word out) the announced specs for the PS3. I must admit I was surprised at how powerful the PS3 is being touted as being. I mean Sony’s numbers seemed to blow the XBox away. I am skeptical about it, since part of the system includes two super heavyweight video cards that are priced at $500 a piece (according to G4 pundits), the PS3 will be incredibly price prohibitive or Sony will be selling the system at a $700 plus loss per system (assuming they price it at $500).

My opinion of Major Nelson is that he’s honest and as the Masonic conspiricists like to say, “on the level.” He does work for Microsoft, however, and I do take that into consideration when contemplating his series of blog entries comparing the Xbox 360 to the PS3. Also, despite being an ignorant moronic blue-collared American, the numbers look valid to me. Being a geek, who got his real geek start on a “Trash 80” playing Adventure and Mission Impossible, I know a bit about computers; enough to believe Major Nelson’s numbers.

Xbox 360 vs. PS3 (Part 4 of 4)

Two caveats, first, neither the PS3 nor the Xbox 360 were present at E3, the PS3 demos having been pre-recorded (and quite possibly all CGI and not game engine) and the Xbox 360 demos running on Apple Powermac G5’s. The G5’s run a PowerPC chip, as I recall, and the Xbox 360 is supposed to run a triple core PowerPC based chip which makes sense when compared to the “25% - 40%” number that has been thrown around by commentators and developers relating to the speed at which the Xbox 360 alpha boxes run in their shops. Secondly neither machine is actually out and as such specs could change dramatically for better or worse come actual release of the machines.

note: The PS3 link is to the IGN website as Sony doesn’t seem to have an official PS3 site up yet.

Update: Turns out there was an actual working Xbox360 over at the ATI booth, behind glass with a guard on it.

'Nother Update: I've been reading a lot about the XBox 360, it's CPU and it's GPU over at Anandtech and [H]ard|OCP. Articles on IBM's Cell CPU (the PS3's chip), it's architecture and memory handling, and about what little is known about both console's Graphics chip. I've got to say that my confidence in Major Nelson's blog entries has gone up. Frankly the reviews/previews/tech-articles at the independent tech news sites make the XBox 360 look even more impressive than Major Nelson's blog entries. Another thing is I've read entries in fanboy forums and comments and was reminded of two things, first is that Bill Gates is Satan and that Sony grossly over-hyped the PS2 while it was still vaporware (as the PS3 is now) and even later in the development cycle.
